– Popular Festivals –

Puerto de la Cruz, one of the most touristic cities of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, is famous for its rich culture and traditions. Throughout the year, it celebrates numerous popular festivals that attract both locals and tourists. Some of the most outstanding are:
Puerto de la Cruz Carnivals
When: Usually in February or March (varies according to the liturgical calendar).
Description: The carnivals in Puerto de la Cruz are famous for their festive atmosphere, colourful parades and mass participation of the people. One of the most anticipated events is the Gala for the election of the Carnival Queen and the traditional Mascarita ponte tacón, a contest in which the participants (usually men) run in high heels, offering a fun-filled spectacle.
Fiestas del Carmen
When: July, especially on 16 July (feast of the Virgen del Carmen).
Description: This is one of the most emblematic festivities in Puerto de la Cruz. The Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen, is taken in procession to the sea, where she is embarked for a maritime pilgrimage. The celebration includes music, fireworks and the participation of the whole town. The image of the Virgin is carried by the fishermen and taken to the water from the fishing dock, which is a very emotional moment.
Fiestas de San Juan
When: The night of 23-24 June.
Description: The night of San Juan in Puerto de la Cruz is known for its bonfires on the beach and the traditions of bathing in the sea at midnight as a symbol of purification. The beach of Playa Jardín fills with people lighting bonfires and celebrating the arrival of summer. Some neighbourhoods organise processions and popular events.
Fiesta del Baño de las Cabras en el Mar
Cuándo: 24th June, coinciding with St. John’s Day.
Description: This ancestral tradition, which dates back to Guanche times (the ancient inhabitants of Tenerife), consists of taking the goats of the local shepherds to the quay of Puerto de la Cruz, where they are bathed in the sea. It is believed that this bath purifies the animals and protects them from disease. The event takes place on the Playa del Muelle beach and is one of the island’s most curious and indigenous celebrations.
San Amaro Patron Saint Festivities
When: November (around 10th November).
Description: The festivities of San Amaro, patron saint of the church of the same name in the neighbourhood of La Paz, include religious and cultural activities, with processions, fairs and concerts. It is a more local festivity, but very much loved by the locals.
Pilgrimage of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza
When: Usually in June.
Description: This pilgrimage is one of the most traditional celebrations in Puerto de la Cruz, with the participation of decorated carts, draught animals, typical Canarian costumes and folk music. The participants walk through the streets of the historic centre to the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia.
International Street Art Festival (MUECA)
When: Usually in May.
Description: Although not a traditional festival, the MUECA festival has gained popularity as one of the city’s main cultural events. For several days, the streets of Puerto de la Cruz are filled with theatre, music, dance, circus and urban art performances, making it a cultural event of reference.
These festivities reflect the mix of local traditions and the city’s tourist vocation, creating a festive atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over the world.
